- Research Library of NSTU is one of the biggest university subdivisions and belongs to the 1st category of libraries at schools of higher education.
- Research Library of NSTU was founded in 1930 when mechanic machine - building institute set up on its own from Gorky State University.

RL fund amounts to 1,4 million copies, including the ones that are produced domestically and foreign ones on humanitarian, social and economic, natural and technical sciences according to profile and adjacent disciplines. There are also issues on Art, sport and fiction. The library fund possesses monographs, reference manuals, periodicals and continued editions, dissertations, R & D reports, normative - technical documentation etc. The literature, which is various in contents and types of editions, satisfies needs of all categories of readers. The fund is formed by traditional as well as by non-traditional bearers.
All categories of our readers are satisfied with the variety of types of editions, represented in our library.
Yearly the Library supplies over 37 thousand of readers.
The amount of books given out is approximately 400 thousand copies; the amount of attendance is over 390 thousands.
To make its funds more familiar the Library organizes days of information science, chair days, subject review of literature, exhibitions of new receipts etc.
On demands of chairs the Library prepares book exhibitions, specialist days, days for students engaged on degree thesis, weeks of technical science, guides and lists of literature.
RL carries out classes on library - biographical knowledge for the students of our university.
Introduction of automated information-library system (AIBS "MARK"). since 1995 has let use new information technologies in the work of the Library. Since 2003 there has been preparatory works for net variant of MARK SQL.
Electronic information - bibliographic machinery of RL at present includes electronic catalogue (it has been being created since 1995), consisting of data bases of scientific, educational and fiction literature ( total volume over 45 thousand descriptions; and over 800 descriptions of periodicals, which have been being received since 1989).
Electronic mail of NSTU RL gives an opportunity to carry out information interchange with the largest Russian and foreign libraries.
The Library is linked up to the supporting computer net of NSTU and has an access to the Internet on-line. With the support of different servers of RL net gives our readers the following opportunities:
- access to electronic catalogues and card index of native and foreign libraries;
- use of electronic textbooks, books, magazines, encyclopedias, dictionaries;
- work with full text data base, including foreign ones, of different contents and purpose: judicial (e.g. "Consultant Plus", which has positively recommended itself), economic (economic reviews, information about branches of production, bank servers etc.), commercial news service and so on.
- access to publishing servers and servers of book-selling organizations;
- access to the servers of higher educational schools;
- availability of modern copying machines provides with the opportunity to make copies of articles and other materials;
- In future it is planned to continue work in the following directions:
- to form the fund of electronic bearers of information;
- to organize and introduce electronic information - bibliographical machinery of RL in NSTU;
- expansion of contacts with other libraries;
- use of world information resources.
