Dates of NSTU History
1896 All-Russia Industrial-and-Art Exhibition opened in Nizhniy Novgorod.
The city authorities, businessmen and the public at large issued an appeal to the
Government to open a technical higher educational institution in Nizhniy Novgorod
Warshaw Polytechnical institute

1898 An opening of Warshaw Polytechnical institute (WPI).
Alexander Evgenievich Lagorio, a prominent scientist in the field
of petergraphy and cristalography, doctor of mineralogy, Alternative Member of Emperor
Academy of Sciences was appointed the first Director of WPI. According to the Statute of the Institute he
was also the Dean of the Mining Departament.
1904 -
Vladimir Prokhorovich Amalitsky was officially
given the post.
1915 - WPI is transferred to Moscow, due to the events of World War I.
1915-1916 - Academic year in Moscow, using the equipment of the local higher educational technical institutions.
1916 - WPI moves to Nizhniy Novgorod.Begining from October 1,1916 the classes started there in temporary premises.
As many as 4600 people took part in the entrance examinations, 400 were enlisted to the Institute.
March, 24, 1917 - V.P. Amalitskiy was replaced by Alexander Nicolaevich Kugushev.
Nizhniy Novgorod Politechnical Institute
1917 - The Order of the Provisional Governement
abolished Warsaw Politechnical Institute and created on its basis Nishniy Novgorod Politechnical Institute (NPI).
NPI prepared three teams of graduates in Nizhniy in 1916, 1917, 1918.
Nizhniy Novgorod State University
1918 - The Decree of Sovet Goverment in June,1918 created Nizhniy Novgorod State University (NSU), Which combined NPI,
People's University (of natural and humanitarian subjects), Higher Agricultural Courses,
and later-Higher Medical Courses and Pedagogical Institute.
Dmitriy Fedorovich Sinitsyn professor-zoologist
became the First Rector of NSU.
After a number of reorganizations, NSU Comprised 6 faculties: Medical, Pedagogical, Agronomical,
Constructional, Mechanical and Chemical.
Mechanical-machinebuilding and chemical-technological institutes.
1930 - Nizhniy Novgorod State University was abolished and six special institutes were
created on its basis. They were as follow: Mechanical-machinebuilding, chemical-technological,

MMI was assigned the following departments: technical (6 specializations), designing (4 specializations),
shipbuilding (2 specializations), CTI was divided into the following five departmrnt: general chemical
industry, fats and oils, forest chemistry, silicate technology, skin technology (skin and wool)
1933 - Due to development of the chairs, departments in MMI were abolished and three faculties - created: Technological, shipbuilding and Production-machinebuilding.
Gorky industrial institute
1934 - MMI and CTI join together to create Industrial Institute.
The classes at Gorky Industrial Institute (GII)
began from Sentember 1,1934 at General Technical, Mechanical-Technological, Transport Machinebuilding and Chemical-technological
faculties. P.A.Turkin became the head of the Institute.
1935 - I.N.Krukov became the head of the Institute.
1936 - Based on the Higner Courses of the Central Military-Industrial Radiolaborartory,
Radiofaculty (as a part of GII)was opened.
1936 - Transport machinebuilding faculty was reorganized into shipbuilding.
1937 - A.Y.Sinitskiy became the head of GII
1938 - Post-graduate courses at GII were opened
1939 - General Technical faculty was closed, the specialization begining from the first year of all faculties. At the
same time, Automobile-and-tractor faculty was closed.
1940 - Automobile-and-tractor faculty was given a new name: Automechanical, one of
parts went ont of Mechanical-technological faculty to create Forging-and-Stamping faculty
1941 -after the begining of the War, P.M.Reschikov was apointed Director of the Institute. In 1941-1945 - as many as 744 people,including 599 students,38 teachers and 107 employees went to the fronts of the war.
The made 2/3 of the total number of employees and students of the institute. 490 lost their lives
in the battles. The remaining teachers employees and students took part in the construction of defense
facilities, the institute labs also worked for the defense purposes. More than 300 employees and students were given awards for their
contribution into research and designing work connected with the defense. The students both worked at the defense enterprises and studies
at the institute.
1943 - M.M.Savanin was appointed Director of the Institute.
1947 - Radiofaculty was made Electrotechnical faculty, having specializations in
electro-engineering and radio-engineering.
1948 - A.F.Kotin was appointed Director of GII.
Gorky Politechnical Institute
1950 - Gorky Industrial Institute was given a new name - Gorky Politechnical Institute (GPI)
1950 - A part of Mechanical faculty - separated to form a new faculty-Metallurgical.
1952 - A part of Electronical faculty separated - to form a new faculty - Radiotechnical.
1953 - An evening branch in Sormovo was formed.
1956 - M.P.Tuzov was appointed a new Rector. Extra-mural faculty in Dzherginsk was created.
1959 - Mechanical-foundry plant was reorganised into Experimental and assigned to GPI.
1962 - A part of shipbuilding faculty went out to from Physico-Technical faculty.
1972 - Y.S.Lezin was appointed a new Rector. Radiotechnical faculty was given a new name - Faculty of Radiotechnical and technical cybernetics.
1974 - The evening faculty in Dzerginsk was made a branch with the day-time and evening tuition.
1980 - On June,8 Gorky Politechnical Institute was decorated with the Order of Red Banner.
1989 - K.N.Tishkov was elected a new Rector.
Nizhniy Novgorod Politechnical Institute
1990 - Gorky was given back its former name Nizhniy Novgorod Politechnical Institute.
Nizhniy Novgorod State Technical University
1992 - Nizhniy Novgorod Politechnical Institute was reorganized into Nizhniy Novgorod State Technical University.
1993 - A new faculty - Social-economic was opened in NSTU.
2004 - V.P.Kiriyenko was elected a new Rector. K.N.Tishkov became the President of NSTU.
2005 - In 2004 among the Russian universities was held the first contest "100 best Russian universities" and "Rector of the year". The government of Russian Federation (RF), State Duma of RF, the Federation Council of RF and the Russian Council of Rectors participated in the contest. Following the results of the contest Nizhny Novgorod state technical university was awarded a golden medal in the category "100 best Russian universities", V.P.Kiriyenko, the rector of the university, was given the title "Rector of the year - 2005".
2007 - In accordance with the resolution No. 33 from February, the 2nd of 2007 the government of Nizhny Novgorod region has named the Nizhny Novgorod State Technical university after Rostislav Yevgenyevich Alekseev.
Our history does not end today will become history tomorrow.
