On the conference of NSTU Students Activists, held on 28^th April, 2004 there was crested a new self-government institution – Student Council. The fact that this institution appeared and its goals form its distinguishing feature. At a point in time of its establishment, several youth organizations had already been functioning: student trade union, Russian Youth Union (initial establishment), Student Centre “Initiative”, Theatre of Variety Art Miniatures, Club of cheery and smart students, Council of course leaders, Hostel Council etc. Each of them worked (and is still working, except SC “Initiative”) in its field. But student life is many-sided, and it is not a rare case, when these sides get mixed up. It was important to create not just coordinating institution of self-government, but independent and capable of functioning organization, which would undertake the function of integration and support of student initiative.
